Colin Joe and Ian Barteaux
Colin Joe and Ian Barteaux, defencemen on the 2014 University Cup champion University of Alberta Golden Bears hockey team, have flown the coop to join the Bakersfield Condors of the East Coast Hockey League.
The fifth-year defencemen helped the Golden Bears to the program’s CIS record 14th national championship on Sunday in Saskatoon, then bussed to Edmonton that night, and then hopped on a place to Bakersfield, California on Wednesday. The Condors currently sport a 30-29-5 record and sit in seventh position in the ECHL’s Western division. They have eight remaining regular season games this year, and then they will advance to the ECHL playoffs.
Joe, who is originally from Edmonton and attended Strathcona Composite High School, played 185 overall games for the Bears, including 128 conference games, and produced 20 goals and 86 overall points, 60 of which came during the regular season. Before joining the Bears, Joe played five seasons in the WHL, including four with the Kelowna Rockets, and played with current NHL’ers Alexander Edler, Luke Schenn, Jamie Benn and Tyler Myers. He is in the final year of his studies in the Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation.
The Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta born Ian Barteaux also played five seasons for the U of A, suiting up in 201 overall contests, including 133 regular season tilts. He tallied 95 total points for the Bears, including 57 during the regular season. At 6’0” and 200 lbs, Barteaux also brought strength and physicality to the ice, and racked up 350 overall penalty minutes. He played for the Kootenay Ice of the WHL, as well as Fort Saskatchewan Traders of the Alberta Junior Hockey League, before attending the U of A to earn his education degree.
